Getting food cravings during pregnancy are more than just urges, it's your body telling you that you need certain nutrients that are missing from your diet.
Let's use 3 examples:
1. A craving for cheese - when you crave cheese or other dairy products, it is because your body needs calcium. You can also add broccoli, spinach and almonds to your diet which will lower your fat intake and up your calcium intake.
2. A craving for raisins - raisins contain a lot of iron and perhaps this is why you would crave them. For more iron in your diet, eat beans, peas, dried fruit, meat and breakfast cereals (those low in sugar - rather those that are organic and sweetened with natural fruit juice.)
3. A craving for olives and pickles - this means that your body needs salt/sodium, which can be a common deficiency during pregnancy. When you crave salty foods, watch your sugar intake as the salt is often craved to balance an excessive sugar intake.
Once you know how to interpret your body's communication, you will be able to feed yourself and your baby with all the right nutrients and you will avoid putting on extra unnecessary weight during and after pregnancy.
