Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are Vital for Baby Brain Development

In Pregnancy Without Pounds, Michelle Moss reminds us that Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are a vital nutrient during pregnancy both for your baby and for you, the new Mom.

EFAs are absolutely necessary during pregnancy for the development of your baby's brain.  Your baby's central nervous system and immune system depend upon essential fatty acids.

A great benefit of ingesting EFAs is that they help to control appetite and reduce food cravings.

The best sources of EFAs are:
  • salmon or other oily fish
  • nuts and seeds
  • green leafy vegetables
Just as necessary during pregnancy is the nutrient Magnesium which helps to develop proper bone growth in your baby and after delivery, magnesium is important as it helps to repair your uterus muscles.
Foods high in magnesium content are: nuts, seeds, whole grains, salad greens and soybeans.
When I was pregnant I would love to eat fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli and honey.
You can learn more about how to minimize weight gain during pregnancy and prepare your body for a quick and easy delivery in Michelle Moss's Pregnancy Without PoundsClick Here!.

Understanding Food Cravings During Pregnancy

Getting food cravings during pregnancy are more than just urges, it's your body telling you that you need certain nutrients that are missing from your diet.

Let's use 3 examples:
1.  A craving for cheese - when you crave cheese or other dairy products, it is because your body needs calcium.  You can also add broccoli, spinach and almonds to your diet which will lower your fat intake and up your calcium intake.
2. A craving for raisins - raisins contain a lot of iron and perhaps this is why you would crave them.  For more iron in your diet, eat beans, peas, dried fruit, meat and breakfast cereals (those low in sugar - rather those that are organic and sweetened with natural fruit juice.)
3. A craving for olives and pickles - this means that your body needs salt/sodium, which can be a common deficiency during pregnancy. When you crave salty foods, watch your sugar intake as the salt is often craved to balance an excessive sugar intake.

Once you know how to interpret your body's communication, you will be able to feed yourself and your baby with all the right nutrients and you will avoid putting on extra unnecessary weight during and after pregnancy.

Michelle Moss will show you how in Pregnancy Without PoundsClick Here!

The Importance of Doing Kegel Exercises During Pregnancy

If you do kegel exercises while you are pregnant, you can prevent the tearing of your perineum during labor, having an episiotomy during delivery and suffering from urine leakage after you have given birth.
It doesn't matter what stage of pregnancy you are at, you can begin these exercises today.

Kegel exercises keep the pelvic floor muscles toned and tight.  If you keep them strong you are most likely to have an easier birth and prevent the problems mentioned above.  Learning to do them correctly is essential:
not only do you need to squeeze the inner muscles of your vagina, you also have to focus on tightening your anal muscle.

Losing Your Baby Belly Fat After Pregnancy

Michelle Moss, author of Mommy Without Pounds, wanted to know the following after she gave birth:

• How long will it take me to lose my baby weight?
• When is it safe to start working out again?
• When can I start training my abs?
• What do I need to do to get rid of my flabby belly?
• Will I ever have a flat stomach again?
• Will my rib cage and uterus ever go back to normal size, my waist is huge?
• How long will it take for me to fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans?
• Can I lose weight while breastfeeding?
• How many calories do I need to eat each day?
• and so many more…
Being as inquisitive and driven as she is, Michelle went searching for answers.  She found a lot of general information about weight loss, cardio and strength training, but nothing specific about exactly how to lose weight after pregnancy.
Michelle didn't want to settle for feeling fat and frumpy in her first year of motherhood - she wanted to enjoy every minute and have the energy to devote to her baby and hubby.
She simply refused to wait until her child was older before she concentrated on her own body.
Michelle was determined to get rid of the post pregnant weight, especially the baby belly, so she designed her own program specifically for losing weight after pregnancy in a safe, fun way.
Mommy Without Pounds will show you exactly how to shed your pregnancy pounds without spending hours in a gym or starving yourself.  You'll receive especially designed exercises which are actually necessary after pregnancy in order to help your body return to normal.

You will also learn what to eat, how many calories are necessary and what food combinations will optimize your health and weight lossClick Here!.

The Most Important Foods to Eat During Pregnancy

Michelle Moss, Author of Pregnancy Without Pounds and Mommy Without Pounds shares with us the essential nutrients we need during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the body needs double the amount of Folic Acid, an essential vitamin that can prevent miscarriage, spina bifida and reduce the risk of Down Syndrome.
Oatmeal, figs, almonds, cottage cheese and bananas all have good amounts of folic acid.

To make sure your body is absorbing the correct amounts of Folic Acid, remember:
Don't cook your food at high temperatures - such as frying because it destroys the folic acid content
Don't freeze food and then thaw it again too often
Don't drink too much water or else you will dilute the amount of essential nutrients that your body needs.

Foods that are good sources of Folic Acid are:
organic cottage cheese
organic egg yolk
wild salmon
figs, ripe bananas, dates, ripe pineapple (including the stem), blackberries, loganberries, cantaloupe & watermelon
wheat germ, rye, oatmeal & barley
beef & beef liver, organic chicken & chicken liver
kidney beans, navy beans, lentils, lima beans, chickpeas, mung beans, split peas & soya beans
almonds, pecan, walnuts & coconut
avocado, cabbage, green beans, kale, broccoli, corn, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower,  mushrooms, watercress & leeks

Michelle Moss's Top 6 Safe Exercises During Pregnancy

I just received Michelle's latest newsletter with so many amazing tips for exercising during pregnancy :-)  As you know, Michelle is the author of "Pregnancy without Pounds", an awesome ebook that will assist you to gain the appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy and guide you  to the safest exercises while pregnant for you and your growing baby...

Here is a list of Michelle's top 6 Cardio Exercises during pregnancy:
1. Walking – always one of the best and most convenient exercises you can do (pregnant or not)! Make sure you wear loose, light clothing (to deflect the sun), and well-supported and cushioned shoes (preferably running shoes).

2. Swimming - an excellent, A+ form of exercise. Swimming, Water Walking and  Deep-Water Running are EXCELLENT forms of exercise during pregnancy.

3. Aerobics (low to moderate intensity) - gets you moving and it's fun. Remember, though, that it’s crucial you listen to your body. Don't do anything that causes sharp pains or dizziness and do avoid any weight lifting above your head, jumping, or lying down.

4. Water Aerobics - highly recommended! Because of the buoyancy, you don’t incur the same impact and jarring of regular aerobics, which of course is easier on your changing body!

5. Elliptical Machine - this is one of my favorites! It’s great because there is no impact involved. The motions are smooth and body-friendly, meaning they are not contra-indicative like a bad stair climber tends to be on the knees.

6. Stationary Bike - this is a good non-weight bearing exercise that is quite easy and safe on the body.

  • It describes the development of your baby from a fetus, month to month, which gives amazing insight into the significant relationship between a mother and her child during pregnancy.
  • It explains how this relationship is established, and how it changes throughout the pregnancy and following birth.
  • There are lots of beneficial physical stretches and exercises, which done correctly, assist in the flow of energy through the mother's body and in the womb, and this has a wonderfully positive effect on your baby.
  • Dr. Bat-Cohen provides new Moms with deep and empathetic understanding of the many changes during pregnancy and its impact on Mom's spiritual and emotional identity.
  • Even following birth, the journey of pregnancy stays with the mother.  Dr. Bat-Cohen ensures that Mothers understand the process they have been through, what these changes mean, how she can use the experiences to be more effective and attentive to her baby and take better care of herself.
  • Women who are planning a pregnancy will find insight in The Wonders of Creation not available in other resources. Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy and Improve Breastfeeding!

When I was pregnant and lived in Italy in the 1990's, the Ladies in the village told me about a miracle oil that would keep me and my baby beautiful and healthy during and after pregnancy: they told me to rub sweet Almond Oil on my belly, thighs, bum and breasts every morning and evening.
This is has several amazing advantages:
  • It will prevent stretch marks on your tummy, your thighs, your bum and your boobs.
  • The circular rubbing motion as you rub your hands over your body and especially your belly, has a soothing and calming effect on your baby and on you.
  • When you rub the Almond Oil on your boobs, be sure to concentrate on your nipples.  This will harden them so that you do not have any problem breastfeeding.  Your nipples will harden and the skin will become rather like leather so that your baby can feed without interruption and you won't be bothered with sensitive nipples.
Try it and see, I promise you it works like a miracle!

Exercises to Avoid During Pregnancy

I've just read Michelle Moss's (author of Pregnancy without Pounds) latest newsletter about the 4 exercises to avoid during pregnancy.
Michelle has 15 years of experience as a Health and Nutrition Coach, a Masters Degree in Holistic Nutrition, a Kinesiology Diploma, and a degree in Psychology.
She advocates for exercise during pregnancy but warns us about what we shouldn't be doing while pregnant:
Here is Michelle's  list of 4 Basic Exercises to Avoid:
1. Avoid deep knee bends (and be careful with squats!) – Because the body loosens up SO much during pregnancy, I wouldn’t recommend any bending past 90-degrees while holding heavy weights!
My personal favorite is Ball Squats, but only do them if you feel OK (STOP if you feel any discomfort in your knees!).

2. Avoid lifting over your head (i.e. standard military press) – Because a lot of women hold their breath when they lift overhead (possibly causing them to feel dizzy and pass out), I’m always cautious of this exercise.
Also, because of the increased lordotic (lower back) curve associated with pregnancy, overhead exercises can place even more stress to the lower lumbar area, causing lower back strain. If you’re committed to lifting overhead - an inclined position may feel better and take the pressure off your lower back.

3. Avoid any “Weight-Bearing” exercises that require you to bend from your waist and compress your abdominals (i.e. deadlifts) – This can cause dizziness and puts pressure on your lumbar spine.

4. Avoid extreme stretching or bouncy movements – Your flexibility has increased greatly, which CAN and does lead to overstretching (painful!) if you’re not careful.

Although I highly recommend Yoga – overstretching is something I’d watch out for! Listen to YOUR body, not what the teacher says or someone else in the class is doing.

Keeping Fit and Healthy During Pregnancy

1. Modify your exercise routine. This is a time to maintain your fitness level with modifications. This is NOT the time to push yourself. Workout at least 3 to 4 times a week to get the benefits from exercise. Make your exercise and workout a continuous habit, and maintain the whole cycle throughout your pregnancy period.

2. Add some variety. Pregnancy is a great time to mix up the routine with some low-impact activities such as yoga or a few gentle laps at your local pool (Warning: Never swim alone or too far from the edge and avoid very cold water).

3. Know your limits. You should be able to carry on a conversation during your entire workout. Your heart rate should not exceed 140 unless your OB says it's fine.

4. Communicate with your doctor and a certified fitness professional. Be sure to ask questions and let consultants know that you are pregnant. Often there are modifications to regular exercises that make them better for pregnancy.

5. Keep moving. You must workout at least 2 times a week to get the benefits from exercise. And keep it going throughout your entire pregnancy.

6. Watch your weight. Remember that your goal is to stay fit, not to lose weight. Losing weight during pregnancy is a big no-no.

7. Stay hydrated. It's key to drink a lot of water before, during and after exercise. Remember, you're drinking for two. Consider carrying a water bottle while you work out.
